Local History weekend success

18 May 2010

Blackwell took a step back in time when the village Local History weekend took place. The event, which was organized by Blackwell Residents’ Action Group, contained a wealth of photos, articles and memorabilia from days gone by.

“We had over 200 visitors through the doors and everyone found something of interest,” explained Katharine Childs, Chair of the Residents’ Group. “Some of the children spotted photos of their parents when they were at school, whilst some of the older generation were able to spot long-lost friends and family on old photos.”

One of the success stories of the weekend came thanks to the Derbyshire Times. A family from Dronfield spotted information about the weekend in the Grassroots section and came along. She was able to find out some information and a photo of a relative who served in the First World War.

Heartfelt thanks are expressed to everyone in the village who made the weekend such a success. The raffle draw took place on Sunday afternoon and the first prize of a magnificent hamper was won by Mr John Lomas. The proceeds from the weekend, totalling around £400, will be split between Residents’ Group funds and the planning Mining Monument for “A” Winning Colliery.
